A family in Teso North, Busia County, is mourning the death of Deborah Wanyama, who succumbed to a snake bite after failing to receive life-saving antivenom.
According to witnesses, Wanyama was washing her legs at River Kamolo in Malaba South Ward when a snake bit her on the hand. Nearby residents rushed her to Kamolo Dispensary and later to Kocholia Sub-County Hospital, where she died due to the unavailability of antivenom.
Eyewitness Sammy Ekutia called on the county government to stock hospitals with antivenom and to conduct public awareness campaigns on snake-bite first aid.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about the countrywide shortage of antivenom, which continues to put rural communities at risk.
