Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders are confidently framing their performance in the recently concluded by-elections as the foundational model Ruling Coalition Heralds By-Election Victories as Blueprint for 2027 for securing a decisive victory in the 2027 General Election.
Addressing celebratory rallies in Uasin Gishu and Kericho counties, key figures within the ruling coalition simultaneously dismissed the opposition’s strategy, arguing it lacks the coherence and substance necessary to mount a meaningful challenge at the ballot box.
Despite securing only narrow wins in several keenly contested seats, the mood among the leaders was markedly confident. The victories were deemed sufficient to fuel political momentum and sharpen the coalition’s messaging ahead of the next national polls. Likuyani Member of Parliament Innocent Mugabe articulated the core political platform, emphasizing a deliberate shift toward issue-based politics over traditional ethnic mobilization.
“Tunapiga uchaguzi wa manifesto, si uchaguzi ya shares na ukabila… wananchi waliwaweza kuwatuliza,” Mugabe stated, translating to: “We are running an election based on the manifesto, not elections based on shares and tribalism… the citizens were able to settle them [the opposition].” His remarks urge the public to reject campaigning centered on personality cults and ethnic divisions.
This confident assessment was strongly echoed by Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, who claimed the recent by-election outcomes had effectively silenced the coalition’s skeptics. “Tujiandae sasa… njia imeanza kuonekana. Hata wale doubting Thomases wengi sasa wameingia chini ya mwamba,” Lusaka declared, signaling that the path to 2027 is now clear and that internal dissenters are being rapidly converted to the cause.
In Uasin Gishu, a close aide to the President, Farouk Kibet, used the rally to officially welcome newly elected Malava MP David Ndakwa, spotlighting unity as the coalition’s guiding principle. “Nchi inaendeshwa na umoja… watu wa Malava wametupatia sifa,” Kibet said, affirming that the Malava victory a symbolic win reflected positively on the coalition’s commitment to national cohesion.
Ndakwa, in his first public remarks since the win, aligned himself fully with the Kenya Kwanza’s broader political arrangement, taking a pointed swipe at the opposition’s recent history. He referenced the political arrangement that saw the opposition leader working with the previous administration: “Na kurudi factory settings… Raila aliacha watu wa ODM was Serikali, and that is how we enjoyed some peace for some time,” suggesting a return to stability under the current ruling party.
The same confident tone was carried through to Kericho County, where leaders presented the by-election results as irrefutable evidence of the coalition’s successful 2027 roadmap. Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot confidently declared the opposition already outmaneuvered, asserting that their challenge would be rapidly dealt with: “Na Rais aanzishe gari yake… hawa upinzani tutamalizana na hao saa kumi na mbili asubuhi,” he boasted.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula adopted an even more direct tone, suggesting that the opposition’s political activities lacked necessary professionalism and seriousness. “We mean business… kura haitaftwi hivo,” Wetang’ula stated, pointedly referencing recent altercations and conduct witnessed during the intense by-election campaign period.
Across both counties, the consistent message from the Kenya Kwanza leadership championed what they repeatedly referred to as a “broad-based, inclusive arrangement.”
This political positioning is seen as a subtle but deliberate nod to the emerging working dynamic between leaders from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and some factions within the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
With the dust settling on the recent polls, the ruling coalition appears intent on capitalizing on the moment, using the by-election results both as political ammunition and a firm springboard for the long electoral march toward the 2027 General Election.
