Merino Strike Rescues Leaders Arsenal in Bruising 1-1 Draw Against 10-Man Chelsea

Mikel Merino struck an equaliser for Arsenal on Sunday as the Premier League leaders battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea in a fiery London derby at Stamford Bridge.

The turning point of the contest came late in the first half when Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Merino. The initial yellow card was upgraded to a straight red following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the 38th minute.

Despite playing a man down, it was Chelsea who took the lead shortly after the restart. Defender Trevoh Chalobah rose highest from a Reece James corner to nod home in the 48th minute, giving the Blues a surprising advantage.

However, Arsenal soon capitalised on their numerical superiority. In the 59th minute, Bukayo Saka provided a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past his marker before delivering a pinpoint cross. Merino, deployed in an advanced midfield role, met the ball with a powerful header that flew past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for his fourth goal of the season, levelling the scores.

The result ensures Arsenal maintains its position atop the Premier League table, now sitting five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who secured a win against Newcastle on Saturday. Chelsea remains in third place, six points adrift of the leaders.
