Elon Musk Urges Followers to Ditch Netflix Over ‘Transgender Propaganda’ Claims

Elon Musk has called on his 227 million social media followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, accusing the streaming giant of pushing what he describes as “transgender propaganda.”

The Tesla and SpaceX boss joined a growing online campaign driven by the conservative account Libs of TikTok, which had urged users to abandon the platform. The group pointed to Netflix’s animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park and the company’s wider diversity efforts as reasons for the boycott.

The controversy escalated after resurfaced posts from the show’s creator, Hamish Steele, appeared to mock conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death. The remarks sparked outrage across right-wing circles, fueling further calls to drop Netflix. Steele has since deleted the posts, later dismissing the backlash as “lies and slander.”

Netflix shares take a hit

The uproar had an immediate impact on Wall Street. Netflix’s stock dipped two percent on Wednesday as the campaign gathered momentum, followed by an additional two percent decline in Thursday trading.

Musk amplified the boycott in a series of posts on X, the platform he owns. In one post, he echoed the rallying cry with a simple: “Cancel Netflix.” In another, he warned parents, saying: “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.”

One of the screenshots shared by Musk highlighted a Netflix company report noting a rise in the number of non-white directors and lead actors in its productions.

Musk’s personal connection to the issue

Musk’s stance on transgender issues has been particularly personal and contentious. His eldest child, Vivian Jenna Wilson, came out as transgender in 2022 and legally changed both her name and gender. Musk later claimed his daughter had been “killed by the woke mind virus,” blaming what he described as ideological indoctrination at an elite California school.

Despite being the world’s richest man, Musk has increasingly aligned himself with conservative culture war themes, often using his massive online presence to rally against what he views as excessive political correctness.

Divided response online

The “Cancel Netflix” push has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters praised Musk for standing up against what they believe is a harmful agenda in children’s entertainment, while critics accused him of fueling intolerance and exploiting culture wars for influence.

Netflix has not issued a formal statement on the controversy, but industry observers say the platform has long been a target for both praise and criticism over its diversity-driven programming.

For now, it remains to be seen whether Musk’s latest campaign will translate into a significant loss of subscribers or simply become another flashpoint in his ongoing online battles.
