Opposition Vows Legal Fight, Claims State Officials “Tampered” with By-Election Results
The united opposition coalition has announced its firm intention to challenge the outcomes of the recent Mbeere North and Malava constituency by-elections, alleging that the contests were severely compromised by direct interference and manipulation by senior state officials.
Speaking at a service at AIC Mukuni Church in Machakos County, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka revealed the coalition’s plan to file a robust legal petition, claiming they possess “credible proof of tampering and state-influenced manipulation of results.”
Musyoka directly accused the ruling party of illegitimate victories in the contested areas. “William Ruto knows that UDA did not win in Mbeere and UDA did not win in Malava,” Kalonzo told the congregation. He insisted that the opposition holds direct evidence of foul play, asserting, “We have evidence… direct interference.”
The opposition leader leveled serious allegations against the conduct of the process, claiming that security officials were pressured during vote tallying and that some leaders were involved in physically tampering with ballot totals.
He described the events as an orchestrated effort to secure victory for candidates aligned with the government. “There was no vote tallying,” he claimed, promising, “We are going to have a very clear, strong petition.”
Kalonzo, who was joined by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and other opposition figures, stated that the coalition will unveil “a very serious approach” to overturn the results, noting that both the country and the international community are closely observing Kenya’s democratic processes.
He further accused the government of employing voter suppression, intimidation, and bribery, specifically asserting that senior public officers actively participated in the campaigns in violation of election regulations.
The Wiper leader vowed to identify those involved: “We are going to clearly indicate which ministers were participating at that level… If you are a public officer at that level, you can’t go and do bad things.”
Despite the legal tensions, Kalonzo also took the opportunity to reaffirm the opposition’s agenda, countering the Kenya Kwanza narrative that they lack a clear direction.
He listed affordable housing, fair taxation, and economic revival as core priorities, asserting, “They say we don’t have an agenda but we do. We spoke of affordable housing. There will be no over-taxation in this country.”

The leaders were in Machakos to celebrate Antony Kisoi’s victory in the Mumbuni North ward by-election, which the opposition interpreted as a significant sign of diminishing support for President William Ruto within the region. The planned court challenge marks the beginning of a fresh political and legal battleground following the dust from the hotly contested by-elections.
